Itsukushima Shrine



Itsukushima Shrine, with its famous torii gate standing in the sea, was built at the end of the 6th century in the elegant shinden-zukuri style, and was registered as a World Heritage site in 1996, and remains a popular tourist attraction. The Otorii (Grand Gate) stands 200 meters from the shore and is made of a large camphor tree. It is also said that the reason why the torii was built in the sea is because the entire Miyajima Island was worshipped as an island of God, and therefore, it was constructed in the sea instead of on land. It is also famous for its tendency to give out bad luck in fortune-telling.

Miyajima Aquarium, Miyajima Marine

Yayasan (Mt.)



Yazan is the name of the mountain and its elevation is 535 meters above sea level. It has long been considered a mountain where gods dwell, and the virgin forests of that time remain intact. It is designated as a national natural monument and is also registered as a World Heritage site. At the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea and scenery around Miyako Island, and the altitude, combined with the certain degree of elevation, makes it possible to enjoy a spectacular view on a fine day. Since an observation deck is provided, there is no need to carry heavy equipment up to the top. If you use the Miyajima ropeway (described below), you can reach the observatory in about 30 minutes on foot from the nearest station. The island is also known as one of Miyakojima's most famous power spots due to the fact that it is dedicated to a deity.

Accessible time There is no time limit, but if you miss the last flight, you will have to descend the mountain by yourself. The last flight leaves at 4:30 p.m. (The service ends at 4:00 p.m. due to the shortened hours of operation during the Corona measures. Omotesando Shopping Street

A restaurant specializing in oyster cuisine located on Miyajima is "Oyster Celebration (Kakiwai) ". The restaurant has an open-air terrace that offers a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and tourist attractions. The interior of the restaurant, which was built on the same level as an old private house, is a cozy space with an old-fashioned atmosphere. The restaurant offers not only oysters, but also coffee and wine, making it a good place to stop by not only for a meal, but also for tea time or a break. The menu is reasonably priced and is not much different from that of a regular café.

Miyajima Sea Kayak



A service that allows visitors to enjoy the Seto Inland Sea by sea kayak is offered. Since then, 100 years after its establishment, the restaurant still welcomes customers in its beautiful interior and is crowded every day during lunch time. The sweet and spicy sauce favored by the Japanese is a perfect match for the plump conger eel, and since you can walk to the restaurant from JR Miyajima-guchi Station, you can stop by during sightseeing, but as mentioned above, the restaurant is quite crowded during lunch time, so it is best to stagger your visit from lunch time to avoid stress. The five towers of the Kanjima Shrine



Built in 1407, this tower has a long history and is designated as a national important cultural property. The bright vermilion color of the tower is distinctive, and on a clear day, it makes for a beautiful photo against the blue sky. Although it is not possible to go inside and explore the building, just looking at it from the outside is a powerful experience, and the structure evokes the history of the battle. It was built some distance away from the main hall of Itsukushima Shrine and was used as a place to keep reserve soldiers on standby in case of war. You can take a free shuttle bus to get there, and the accesories are excellent.

Miyajima Pier



The pier is served by ferries that connect Miyajima to the mainland. From the mainland, it takes about 10 minutes to reach Miyajima, where you can interact with friendly deer. You cannot feed the deer as you can in Nara, Kyoto, but it fits the sacred atmosphere of Miyajima just fine. Of course, you can take pictures, and since they are not relentless in asking you to feed them, it is a good idea to drop by before sightseeing.

Miyajima History and Folklore Museum



This museum provides visitors with a glimpse into the history of Miyajima from the Meiji Era to the Edo Era. Some of the exhibits are designated as national tangible cultural properties, and materials and cultural assets related to Miyajima, including those of Taira no Kiyomori, are preserved and exhibited.

Toyokuni Shrine (Senjatakaku)



The Toyokuni Shrine is the largest building on Miyajima. It is famous for having been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but since Hideyoshi died during its construction, it remains on the way to the present. The Daikyodo boasts an area that can accommodate 857 tatami mats, from which it takes its name. Today, the shrine is named Toyokuni Shrine and is dedicated to the late Lord Hideyoshi. It is also designated as a national important cultural property.

Red Leaf Valley Park



This is a garden with beautiful autumn leaves at the foot of "Yayama Primeval Forest ", which is designated as a national natural monument. Visitors can enjoy fresh green trees in summer and beautiful autumn leaves in fall and winter. Approximately 700 broad-leaved trees are planted in the garden, and the area around the Momiji Bridge is considered to have the most beautiful effects. The garden, planted with maple and maple trees, is sometimes lit up until around 8:00 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the night and the spectacular view at the same time.

Daweiji Temple



This temple is dedicated to Benzaiten, the god of study. Daigan-ji Temple is located near Itsukushima Shrine, so you can stop by on your way home when you visit Itsukushima Shrine. Although it is not usually open to visitors inside, it is open to visitors during the Itsukushima Benzaiten Grand Festival, which is held on June 17. In addition to study, the shrine also enshrines the God of Nadegami, who is said to be able to help with physical ailments if you stroke the same part of the body that is ailing.

Miyajima Baogaura Nature Park



At Miyajima Baogaura Nature Park, visitors can enjoy swimming and camping. It may be difficult to imagine camping in a tourist area, but Miyajima Baogaura Nature Park is located along the sea, a short distance from the city center. It is recommended if you want to spend a relaxing time with your family or partner. Even if you do not have camping equipment, you can use cottage-style kevins. Of course, you can also camp using tents. One of the features of Miyajima Baogaura Nature Park is that you can enjoy seafood even though it is a campground. Usually, only mountain foods are available, but since it is near the sea, you can eat fresh oysters.
