mythological island off the coast of Japan

The World Heritage Site "Okinoshima Island "is called Kami no Shima (Island of the Gods), and the entire island is within the precincts of Munakata Taisha Shrine. The entire island is within the grounds of Munakata Taisha Shrine. Landing on the island is forbidden, and there are many prohibitions, such as "not a single tree, plant, or stone on the island may be taken home" and "what you see or hear on the island must not be divulged. Since national rituals were held on the island in ancient times in Japan, there are precautions such as misogi (purification rites) and women are forbidden to enter the island. This is why the island has been registered as a World Heritage site and is so sacred.

Only one priest on the island.

There is no hospital, so even a single fish bone can kill you. However, there is a story that even if you get sick, you can get rid of it by drinking the water of the island. Fishermen bring fish to the island for meals when they are fishing.
The World Heritage Site is based on this Okinoshima faith and others.

Miike Coal Mine Miyahara Mine

"This is a coal mine site registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage: Iron and Steel Making, Shipbuilding, and Coal Industry ". The Miike Coal Mine was sold by the Meiji government to Mitsui, which continued to mine 400,000 to 500,000 tons of coal annually. During the Meiji era, coal mining was the main source of energy in Japan, and a railroad dedicated to the Miike coal mine was built to steadily support the nation. The remains of that railroad and other structures can still be seen today.

Coal was called "black diamond" in those days.

It has been said that coal is like a black diamond, the way it comes out when you dig it up. In fact, the majority of Japan's energy came from coal, and it is no exaggeration to say that Japan prospered on the back of this energy. The deeper you dug, the deeper the water seeped out, and the more you dug, the deeper the water seeped out, and the more you dug, the deeper the water seeped out. It has become a recommended sightseeing spot where visitors can catch a glimpse of such a world heritage site.

Niihara and Nuyama Kofun Tumulus Group

It is said that there were approximately 2,800 burial mounds in the Munakata area.
The tombs of the Munakata clan, a powerful family, as well as the three Munakata goddesses are enshrined in this group of burial mounds. The tombs are of various shapes and are located on a gently sloping hill. There are also five front-rear circular mounds, which clearly show that this was a special area. They are built around the sea and a pond, so the view from the tombs is very nice. There are still 41 well-preserved tumuli left on the hillside.

First time for a burial mound to be registered as a World Heritage site!

This is the first time in Japan that a burial mound has been registered as a World Heritage site, indicating that the tombs are in very good condition in Japan. The fact that the inside of the tombs had not been ransacked and were left in a clean state was also a major factor in their designation as a World Heritage site.
In order to protect the farmland countryside around the tombs, there is nothing to obstruct the view of the magnificent tombs around them.
