Onomichi is surrounded by retro streets and the calm Seto Inland Sea. With many sightseeing spots and fashionable cafes, Onomichi is a must-visit town when visiting Hiroshima.

Speaking of Onomichi, "Senkoji Temple "

"Senkoji Temple "is located on a small mountain north of Onomichi Station, offering a panoramic view of Onomichi cityscape and Onomichi Port. There is a ropeway from the city center to Senkoji Park, which takes about 3 minutes from the base station to the summit station for 500 yen round trip. Of course, you can also walk up the mountain. The climb takes about 30 minutes, with a gentle ascent and a series of stairs. You will encounter cats and narrow paths that are typical of Onomichi, so you will feel like you are exploring the area.

At Senkoji Park, you can experience the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and autumn leaves in fall. Senkoji Park is also a sacred place for lovers, and charms for matchmaking are available at Senkoji Temple, so why not buy one as a souvenir of your trip?

There are many stylish cafes in Onomichi. Here are two of the best cafes in Onomichi.
The first is "Cafe Kitsune Rain ", a 20-minute walk from Onomichi Station, just past the Onomichi Main Street shopping street. The dimly lit interior of this Taisho Romantic-inspired store is like stepping back in time. The aroma of carefully hand-drip coffee spreads through the air. Cream sodas are also popular, and their bright colors capture the hearts of women. On the food menu, bittersweet caramelized retro pudding and baked pancakes are recommended.

Miyajima

Miyajima is the most famous tourist spot in Hiroshima. Miyajima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, and Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, attracts many tourists every day. Visitors to Miyajima can enjoy eating out, visiting Itsukushima Shrine, and interacting with deer. Here are some tips on how to enjoy Miyajima to its fullest 120%, which is easily accessible from the city.

Eating and drinking at Miyajima!

The first thing you want to do on Miyajima is everyone's favorite: eating! There are many Hiroshima specialties on Miyajima that can be eaten with one hand.
The first place you should stop by is "Anago-meshi-ue no ". Located at Miyajima-guchi, there are long lines at lunchtime on weekends and holidays for their famous anagome-meshi. They sell boxed lunches, so it is recommended to buy one before boarding the ferry and eat it on Miyajima. The grilled anago is crispy on the surface and fluffy on the inside, and the sweet soy sauce-based sauce is well mixed with the anago. It goes great with rice, and you can't stop eating it with chopsticks.

Many Hiroshima specialties catch the eye when you land on Miyajima. Among them, we recommend "deep fried momiji ". The fried momiji buns are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside, and are very delicious. There are various flavors to choose from, such as red bean paste, cream, and chocolate, so it is hard to decide which one to go for. Oysters and nigiriten are also popular.

Worship at the World Heritage Site "Itsukushima Shrine "

"Itsukushima Shrine "was built in 593, and in 1146, Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present temple-style appearance. "Along with Matsushima in Miyagi and Amanohashidate in Kyoto, it is known as one of Japan's three most scenic spots "and was registered as a World Heritage site in 1996.
When you visit Miyajima, you should visit the main shrine floating on the sea. The atmosphere changes with the tide, and you can see many different faces.

Take a break at a café with a spectacular view

A recommended cafe on Miyajima is "Oyster Celebration ". Located in a narrow alleyway, this café is a renovated old private house, with warm natural light pouring into the spacious interior. You can take a relaxing break while looking at the five-story pagoda. "The most popular item at Oyster Celebration "is the "Hiroshima Lemon Rare Cheesecake ", which uses lavish amounts of lemons grown in the Seto Inland Sea. The fluffy, rich, sweet and sour lemon cake is smooth and exquisite. Topped with lemon peel, the cake is packed with lemon flavor. You can enjoy all the deliciousness of lemon in this cake.

Wine and cake sets are also available. The restaurant also offers a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, so you can forget about reality and immerse yourself in a relaxing atmosphere on Miyajima.

Okuno Island

Okunojima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea with a circumference of about 4 km. Accessible by a 15-minute boat ride from Chukai Port in Takehara, the island offers a relaxing time.

The whole island is full of rabbits!

Many people, both in and out of the prefecture, visit this island. Their purpose is to see rabbits! There are about 900 rabbits living on the island. They are very friendly and do not run away when you approach them. Some are running around, some are sleeping, and some are eating. It is very relaxing.

Secrets of Okunojima

"Okuno Island "used to manufacture poison gas weapons. Because it was done in complete secrecy, it did not even exist on maps and was called "the island that was erased from the map ". More than 70 years later, there are still buildings and gun emplacements from that time, and at the poison gas museum you can learn about the tragedy of war, victims of poison gas, and other sad but important aspects of Hiroshima's past that we must not turn away from.
Today, Okunojima is a calm island that is at odds with the poisonous gas. Why has there been such an increase in the number of rabbits? There are several theories, including that they were brought to the island for scientific experiments on poison gas, or that rabbits from an elementary school escaped, but the real reason is not clear.

Relax in the only accommodation on the island

There is only one lodging facility on the island: "Vacation Village ". All rooms have ocean views, and there is a spacious hot spring bath that gives you a resort-like atmosphere. A buffet featuring many ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea is also popular, and you can enjoy oysters and Hiroshima beef.

"Restaurant Usanchu "is also located on the premises, and octopus dishes and fried oyster set menus are popular. The cafe also sells organic coffee and soft-serve ice cream, making it a great place to take a break from sightseeing.
