Itsukushima Shrine

What is Itsukushima Shrine?

If you are going to Miyajima, it is essential to visit "Itsukushima Shrine ". Itsukushima is also called "Aki-no-Miyajima "and is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan along with Matsushima and Amanohashidate. Six of the shrine buildings, including the main hall, worship hall, and cloister, are designated National Treasures, and 14 are designated Important Cultural Properties. 1996 saw the shrine inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The beautiful shinden-style shrine pavilions were maintained by Taira no Kiyomori, and have remained in a state of repeated repair up to the present day. The Otorii (Grand Gate), about 200 meters from the worship hall, is made of camphor trees, and depending on the tide, visitors may be able to walk up to the gate. It is said that it took 20 years to find the giant tree before it was built. The atmosphere changes with the tide, so please enjoy the changing scenery when you visit Miyajima.

Extensively renovated in 2011, "Miyajima Marine ", affectionately known as "Miyajima Aquarium ", exhibits more than 13,000 fish and sea animals of about 350 species, mainly sea creatures from the Seto Inland Sea.
The aquarium is built in a Japanese-style architecture in consideration of the landscape, and its basic philosophy is to provide visitors with a relaxing and friendly environment.

Popular marine animals

In the marine animal area, visitors can see cute animals such as penguins, sea lions, seals, and otters.
"Especially popular at Miyajima Aquarium "are the snapping turtles. They are a member of the dolphin family at the top of the food chain in the Seto Inland Sea, and are characterized by their smiling faces. They used to be a common sight around Miyajima, but are now a rare species.

In the penguin pool on the second floor, you can observe penguins sleeping on rocks, swimming gracefully, and depending on the season, couples getting along well with each other in nesting and raising their young.
They also have live sea lion shows every day, so check the times and go.

Crowded with children! Fureai Corner

"At Miyajima Aquarium ", you can observe and directly touch shore creatures up close. Penguin petting events are also held, allowing visitors to experience things that they would not be able to in their everyday lives. It is a very valuable experience for children.

Full meal menu

"On the second floor of the Miyajima Aquarium "you can enjoy a delicious meal. Commonly known as "Miyajima Marine Kitchen ", it is open from 10:00 to 16:30.
The menu includes many Hiroshima specialties such as fried oysters and grilled conger eel ", Miyajima Marine Don ", as well as curry rice, hamburgers, ramen noodles, and many other items.

Red Leaf Valley Park

Seasonal Scenery

"Momijidani Park "is located 5 minutes further up the mountain from Itsukushima, at the foot of the Chuanzan Primeval Forest (Misen-genshirin). The park stretches along the Momijidani River and has a quaint atmosphere.
"Momijidani Park "is planted with about 700 maple trees, including Iroha maple and giant maple, which are beautiful in spring, green in summer, and red in mid to late November. By the end of the season, the ground is dyed red with fallen maples, creating a beautiful carpet of autumn leaves. During the fall foliage season, the area is illuminated, making it a very popular photo spot. This is a spot where visitors can fully enjoy nature as it changes with the seasons.

Momiji manju also born here?

"The beautiful autumn leaves in Momijidani Park "have been planted and cared for by the local people since the late Edo period (1603-1868), creating the beautiful scenery we see today.
It is said that the beauty of the autumn leaves at Miyajima was the inspiration for the creation of momiji manju, a souvenir from Hiroshima.

Senjokaku

What is Senjo-kaku?

"Senjamikaku "is the common name for the main hall of "Toyokuni Shrine "at the shrine on Miyajima. The reason why it is called "Senjo-kaku "is because, as the name suggests, it is as wide as a thousand tatami mats. (By the way, officially it is as large as 857 tatami mats.)

In 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered Ankokuji Keioni, a political monk, to build this large sutra hall for the monthly recitation of the Senbutsu Sutra.
It is the largest building on Miyajima Island and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

extra-large rice scoop

"One of the highlights of Senjo-kaku "is the oversized rice scoop enshrined in the hall. Miyajima has long been one of the leading producers of wooden rice ladles in Japan, and the use of rice ladles was spread throughout the country by visitors to Miyajima. At some point, "scooping rice with the "Shamojis" "became "scooping victory "and the giant "Shamojis" were dedicated in prayer for victory.

Yayasan (Mt.)

The highest mountain in Miyajima

"Yayama "is 535 meters above sea level in the center of Miyajima. At the top of the mountain is the "Miyajima Yayama Observation Resting Area ", which was rebuilt in 2013 and offers a panoramic view of Miyajima.

It is also famous that Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan, praised "the view from the top "as the best of the three most scenic spots in Japan.
Near the top of the mountain is the Gozan Shrine, and from the top to the foot of the mountain are several buildings of the Daisho-in Temple.

How to get to the summit

There are seven main climbing routes from the foot of the mountain to the summit. The most major is to take the Miyajima Ropeway, which leads from Momijidani Station to Shishi-iwa Station. A free shuttle bus (every 20 minutes at 10, 30, and 50 minutes every hour) runs from the Momijidani Park entrance to Momijidani Station, and is recommended for those with children or for sightseeing purposes who are short on time.

On the other hand, "Mt. Yazan "is also a famous climbing spot and can be walked up from Momijidani Park in about 90 minutes. It is a bit tough with many hills, but it is a good exercise.
There is also a route from Daisho-in Temple via the Niomon Gate Ruins, which has many stone steps and takes 120 minutes.
