Beppu Station

Beppu Station

Beppu Station" is the terminal station that serves as the gateway to the Beppu area. It is also the departure and arrival point for buses from Oita Airport, so it is probably no exaggeration to say that it is the place to visit when sightseeing in Beppu. Since you will often travel around Beppu area by bus, you should check the timetable and bus stop. The well-developed bus transportation network is a blessing for solo travelers, but depending on the destination, the number of buses may be limited, so it is important to prepare in advance. Sometimes, you may need to take a cab to enjoy your sightseeing.
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University is located nearby, and because of the international flavor of the university, many foreign students could be seen.

The water is not too hot, but just the right temperature, and the soft water warms your hands comfortably. Located in front of the station and available free of charge, it is the perfect place to relax and feel a little refreshed after a tiring trip.

Hot springs in shopping malls. Footbaths that have become a part of daily life.

Signs at Kannawa Onsen

Kannawa Onsen is one of Beppu's eight hot springs, and is shrouded in steam. Away from the downtown area, this is a hot spring resort with a retro townscape. The Kannawa area is also home to the Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour).
Kannawa Onsen (鉄輪温泉) has become famous for being difficult to read, but it is a must-visit spot when in Beppu.

It is said that since ancient times, there has been a culture of Touji (hot-spring cure), and long-term residents would bring rice and vegetables to exchange, making the area a bustling place.

You can make your own steamed food from hell!

Jigokushi-Koubou Kannawa

This is a cooking method that uses the heat from the high-temperature steam emanating from the hot springs, and has been used in Beppu since the Edo period (1603-1868). Ingredients are placed on a colander and placed in a "jigoku steaming kettle," a pot that emits steam of about 100 degrees Celsius, and then covered with a lid.
Steaming at once with salty hot spring steam locks in the original flavor of the food.

Kettle used for making jigoku steamed food

You can purchase a meal ticket for what you want to eat from the ticket vending machine inside the restaurant, and then you can have the food.
With that, we move to the smoky kettle area.

The number of kettles is limited, so it takes time when the place is crowded.
Please allow plenty of time for your visit.

When your number is called, go to the kitchen and finally start cooking.
Please wear large heat-resistant gloves and enjoy the hell-steaming experience while receiving instructions from the staff.

tour of hell

Crocodile Hell

Beppu is so famous and popular that it is called "Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour)." To begin with, Jigoku Meguri consists of a course that takes visitors to seven different hells: Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Onishihobojigoku (Onishihobojigoku), Kamado Jigoku (Hell), Oniyama Jigoku (Mountain Hell), Shiraike Jigoku (Hell), Kaminokake Jigoku (Hell of Blood), and Ryumaki Jigoku (Hell of Tatami).

It is said that the name "hell" came about because fumaroles, hot mud, and boiling water have been gushing out there for more than 1,000 years now, and were abhorred by the people.

Admission to any of the seven hells is 450 yen, and a common admission ticket to all seven is 2,200 yen.

The seven hells are relatively close together and it takes about two and a half hours to see them all.
There is a wide variety of cars, rental cars, and regular sightseeing buses available, so you can visit with whatever suits your sightseeing purposes.

Kamado Jigoku 2-chome

Kamado Jigoku is characterized by a park decorated as if it were a theme park.
Many important keywords from "Oni-no-Blade" are scattered throughout the park in reference to the character of Sumijiro Kamakado from "Oni-no-Blade," which has become a major breakout hit in recent years.

In the park, there is a symbolic statue of a blue water dragon (its tail is also equipped with a sword to slay demons), which is depicted in the techniques of the main character, Sumijiro Kamakado, and a red demon standing on a high platform holding an item with the name of the main character on it. The story is that the demon who misbehaved at Yawata Kagamon Shrine has reformed here and is now the gatekeeper of hell. It is the best photo spot in the park.

Various hells are introduced in Kamado Jigoku, divided into X-chome.

At Kamado 3-chome, you can see a cobalt blue hell with a bright red fence reminiscent of hell.

▲Gokuraku 4-chome

At the Gokuraku 4-chome, visitors were able to experience the steam from the hot springs by bringing their throats and faces close to the hot springs.
In addition, the second paradise was also able to drink hot spring water.

▲Foot Soup

At the last stop on the park's route, there is a corner where you can sit back and enjoy the footbath and a store.
The store's products include cooked foods steamed in hell, jigoku pudding, onsen pitan (hot spring steamed eggs), and Oita's specialty, stone-filled manju (buns).

Visitors can soak in three types of footbaths and enjoy gourmet food unique to Kamado Jigoku.
