Abusubi Kannon (Bandaiji Temple)

Abuto Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) in Fukuyama City is a place known as the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) for safe childbirth and child rearing, but it is also a place where visitors can enjoy spectacular views and thrills. It is a temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, located at the southern tip of the Numakuma Peninsula, on the rugged tip of Cape Abusagi, and was built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period by Mori Terumoto, an important cultural property of Japan. The temple is also famous for its unique landscape, standing in harmony with the sea and rocks, and was even featured in an ukiyoe woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, a famous ukiyoe woodblock artist of the Edo period.

When you reach the very end of the Kannon-do Hall, directly below you is a precipitous cliff, with waves lapping against the cliff and the sea, a thrilling place to be. The view in front of you is spectacular, offering a panoramic view of the blue ocean, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the horizon. However, the knee-high fence of the Kannon-do Hall may be intimidating at first, especially if you are not fond of heights. Visitors who are uncomfortable with heights should be especially careful.

Takayama Observatory [Misatsushichi ]

The "Takayasan Observatory "in Miyoshi City is also recommended as a spectacular spot. Miyoshi is known as a mountain basin, and the thick fog that forms from fall to early spring sometimes covers the city area. From this observatory, you can see the magnificent "sea of fog ".

However, there are a few conditions for viewing the Sea of Fog: it should be an early morning during the months of October-March, preferably on a clear day with little wind. Also, the humidity must be high and radiative cooling must be occurring. If these conditions are met, you may be able to witness a spectacular view of the foggy sea, which is not often seen. In particular, the collaboration between the sunrise and the foggy sea is truly mystical. To be a witness of this mystery, you need to fulfill the above conditions, but it is a view worth seeing, so please give it a try.

At night, it is also a spot to see and enjoy the night view, and when there is no fog, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Miyoshi City. Especially in winter, you can see a colder but more glittering night view. If you are lucky enough to go to see the night view on a foggy day, you will be able to see the fantastic sight of the fog and the night view, which is an impressive experience to be proud of.

Sakhalin Gorge (i.e. the Gorge of Sakhalin)

Teishakyo Gorge in Shobara reigns as one of the most scenic spots in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is famous for its autumn foliage viewing, but there are also many other sights to see, such as the "male bridge, one of the three largest natural bridges in the world ", and the "bell millstone ", which will take your breath away with its natural formations.

Male bridge (Ongyo-bashi)

The male bridge is a 90-meter-long natural bridge made of limestone, and is so valuable that it is recognized as one of the three most important natural bridges in the world. This natural bridge is also designated as a natural monument. "This bridge is so mysterious and majestic that it is said to have been built by God. " This is a spectacular spot that you must keep in mind when visiting Teishakyo Gorge.

Baiyun-dong

It is said that there are many limestone caves in Teishakyo Gorge, of which Hakuundo Cave is the most representative. The cave is 200m deep and is cool at around 11°C. The stalactites, stalagmites, and stone pillars have been maintained in their natural state, making it not only a great viewing spot but also a bit of a cave exploration experience.

Dragon Bridge

The big red bridge over Shenlong Lake is called "Shenlong Bridge ". The view from here is also spectacular, especially if you visit during the autumn foliage season, this will be an excellent view point. The bridge is a registered tangible cultural property.

Visitors can also take a sightseeing boat ride on Shenlong Lake, which takes about 40 minutes and is a must-do at least once.

Three Gorges

One of Hiroshima's best-kept secrets is Sandankyo, one of the special scenic spots in Aki Ota Town, Hiroshima Prefecture. Sandankyo is a 16-km-long gorge where visitors can walk through a mysterious world of nature that cannot be experienced in everyday life. The scenery, which changes with the seasons, is one of the highlights, and especially during the season of autumn leaves, you can see the beautiful collaboration of autumn leaves and the gorge, which is truly a spectacular view.

There are a variety of walking trails in Sandankyo, some of which can take up to four hours to complete, while others take only 20 to 30 minutes. Therefore, many people can enjoy nature, from those who are physically fit and want to explore every corner of the Sandan Gorge to those with small children who just want to relax and have fun.

three-section tallies

There are five representative scenic spots in Sandankyo: "Kurobuchi ", "Sarutobi ", "Nidan Falls ", "Sandan Falls ", "Mitsu Falls ", which are collectively called the Five Great Views. Of these, I especially recommended San-dan Falls. As the name suggests, the sight of the powerful waterfall flowing in three stages is truly a spectacular experience of nature.

It takes about an hour by car to get there from the center of Hiroshima City, so it is probably the best place for a drive.
