twenty-fourth of the sexagenary cycle
A masterpiece that has been filmed many times, conveying the horrors of war.
The first work set in Kagawa Prefecture is the novel "Twenty-Four Eyes "by Sakae Tsuboi, published in 1952.
"Twenty-Four Eyes "Sakae Tsuboi, the original author
This work is the story of Mr. Oishi and his 12 students who were assigned to a branch school on an island, living in the period from the early Showa Period (early Showa era) to shortly after the war, when the shadow of war was still strong. The story is set in "a cold village on the Seto Inland Sea ", and although the specific location is not stated, it is strongly believed to be Shodoshima, the birthplace of the author, Sakae Tsuboi.
""The children's strong bonds with Mr. Oishi and his students, and the tragedy of the children with pure eyes whose lives were turned upside down as they were caught up in a world that was moving toward war, are all worth seeing again. How do we perceive the tragedy of children with pure eyes whose lives are turned upside down as they are caught up in a world that is moving toward war?
This work has now (October 2022) been adapted into numerous films: two movies, eight TV dramas, and one anime.
Here is an introduction to the film version.
①Made in 1954
The first film adaptation in Japan, only two years after its original author, Sakae Tsuboi, published it
In 1954, the first film was made. The film was made by a cast and producer who had all actually lived through the war, which made the film more realistic in terms of its feelings and realism. Directed and written by Keisuke Kinoshita, with Hideko Takamine as Dr. Oishi.
This film was ranked first in "the 28th Kinema Junpo Best Ten "announced the same year. Incidentally, the second place went to "Woman's Garden ", also directed by Keisuke Kinoshita, and the third place went to "Seven Samurai ", directed by Akira Kurosawa. You can see how much it struck a chord with the Japanese people.
And with this work, the image of "24 Eyes = Shodo Island "was created.
(2) 1987 remake
Keisuke Kinoshita, who wrote the screenplay for the 1954 version, adapted the script again. The film was directed by Yoshitaka Asama and starred Yuko Tanaka. Shigeaki Saegusa composed the music, which won the 11th Japan Academy Prize for Best Music.
Incidentally, as the husband of Dr. Oishi, who dies in battle in the middle of the film, is Tetsuya Takeda, who four years later appeared in "101st Proposal "and became the talk of the town....

It is also included in "Setonaikai National Park ", the first national park designated in Japan along with Kirishima and Unzen.
After the volcanic activity that occurred 13 million years ago, tectonic movements and erosion over a long period of time created the complex valley that you see today. The scenery of trees growing wild in each season is truly spectacular.

Mushifuri is an annual event in which people walk around terraced rice fields holding torches and calling out "tomose, tomose ". The purpose is to pray for a good harvest by preventing insects from catching on the rice plants. This event has been held annually for 300 years, but was discontinued for several years due to the decrease in the number of people. summary
Here we have introduced two films set in Kagawa Prefecture. A place of mild climate and character. We chose Shodoshima Island as the setting for both of them, but despite its serenity, the main characters in these films live harsh lives there. Such a gap may be exactly what our lives are also like. If you have a chance to visit this island or Kagawa Prefecture, why not spend some time relaxing and thinking about the patterns of life and the human world as portrayed by the people? The more you think about such sadness, the more beautiful the scenery you will see.
