We hope you will read this book if you are looking to cool down a bit during the hot summer or if you are wondering where to go on your summer trip!

Hokkaido is famous as the coldest prefecture in Japan.
Among them, the Abashiri area near Rikubetsu, known as the coldest town in Japan, has a relatively cool climate even in summer!
Why don't you spend your summer in Hokkaido, away from the dangerous level of heat in the city center, and get in touch with the great outdoors?
The plan presented in this article assumes that you will stay in the Furano area for the first night and in the Abashiri area for the second night.

[Day 2 ]Let nature and animals heal you!

Shirogane Blue Pond

A pond in Biei-cho, Hokkaido that radiates a breathtakingly mysterious blue "Shirogane Blue Pond ".
It is said to have made a name for itself around the world in 2012 when it was adopted as Apple's Mac OS X wallpaper.
In fact, when you visit, you will find that the parking lot is jammed with many tourists from overseas, so please allow plenty of time for your visit!

Shirogane Blue Pond, as its name suggests, is an unusually beautiful and spectacular spot where the surface of the pond shines blue.
The pond is an artificial lake formed when river water stagnated in a block weir that was set up to protect the urban area from disasters such as the repeated eruptions of Tokachi-dake volcano.

The reason why the pond looks blue is because the water containing aluminum that gushes out in the Shirogane Onsen area upstream mixes with the river water of the Biei River, forming a colloidal state (particles dispersed in a liquid). These particles reflect sunlight and blue light, which has a short wavelength and is easily scattered, reaches the eyes, which is why it is said to appear blue.

In other words, it is not that the pond water is blue in color, but rather that the surrounding water quality and the sun's rays are the same, causing the pond to appear visually blue.
Therefore, the appearance of the pond, including its hue, changes depending on the time of day, weather, and angle.
Another attraction is that it looks different depending on the season.
In spring, the pond often appears greenish blue, in summer it is light blue, in fall the autumn leaves are reflected on the surface of the water, and in winter the white-tinted larch and frozen pond can be seen, and light-up events are held.
Please visit at different times of the year!

Hill of Four Seasonal Colors

A flower garden in Biei with a view that symbolizes a rural landscape "Shikisai-no-oka ".
It is a particularly beautiful and popular spot where visitors can enjoy a vast flower garden of approximately 150,000 square meters.
The flowers in season change one after another, so you can see different faces from season to season, and there is always something new to see at any time of the year.

The flower garden is so large that it is very difficult to walk through it all.
The tractor bus is a great way to get around the park. It is a vehicle that takes about 15 minutes to make a round of the park. One of the attractions of the bus is that it stops at photo stops along the way.

You can also rent a four-person cart.
The carts can be driven by themselves, allowing them to move freely and easily around the entire expansive grounds. A regular driver's license is required to drive the carts, so if you have a driver's license, please try them out!

In addition to flower gardens, the park offers a wide range of activities such as an alpaca farm, ATV experience, and helicopter rides.
You can also try delicious Hokkaido specialties at restaurants and stores!
We recommend visiting the park first thing in the morning, as the park gets very crowded after noon.

Museum Network Goes to Prison

The most famous prison in Japan "Abashiri Prison ".
The prison was considered the harshest and most difficult to escape from in Japan. Abashiri Prison has attracted even more attention in recent years due to the popularity of movies and TV dramas set in the prison.

Museum Abashiri Prison is an open-air history museum that preserves and exhibits buildings that have actually been used in Abashiri Prison since the Meiji era.
The museum features realistic wax figures and other objects that realistically recreate the life of prisoners in those days.

The Abashiri Prison is particularly famous for its five-wing radial cells.
It is characterized by its five cells, which are built in a radial pattern from the side to the rear with the central guard station at the center, and connected by a corridor.

You can also learn about the construction of the inside of the cell, details of the equipment in the prison at the time, and the famous escape king, a.k.a. "Torakichi Gosunkugi ". Another attraction of the museum is that it offers several hands-on facilities.
In the drift ice experience room, which is kept at minus 15 degrees Celsius, real drift ice is placed and visitors can experience the freezing of wet towels, allowing them to experience the frigid Okhotsk winter throughout the year.
The Tentozan Observatory offers spectacular 360-degree views of the four seasons.
