Douji ~ "Yufuin "? "Yufuin "? ~

The famous hot spring resorts of Oita Prefecture "Yufuin "are written in kanji: "Yufuin "and "Yufuin ".

Since you often see both notations and both kanji characters are used on official websites, you may be confused as to which is correct.

Let's settle that question here!

It used to be "Yufuin "!

Yufuin was originally written as "Yufuin "

Kita-Yufu Village, Minami-Yufu Village, and Yudaira Village were established in 1889, and in 1936, Kita-Yufu Village and Minami-Yufu Village merged to form "Yufuin Village ".

Later, in 1948, the name was changed from "Yufuin Village "to "Yufuin Town ", but in 1955, a major merger took place again.

The merger involved "Yufuin Town "and its neighbor "Yudaira Village ".

This merger created "Yufuin Town ", which borrowed one character from Yudaira Town and changed "由 "of "Yufuin "to "湯 ".

With the Heisei merger, "Yufuin Town, Yufu City became ".

Further complicating matters was the Heisei merger of 2005.

The three towns of Shonai, Hasama, and Yufuin merged to form "Yufu City "and Yufuin Town, where Yufuin Hot Springs and Yufuin Station are located, became "Yufuin Town, Yufu City ".

Currently, "Yufuin "and "Yufuin "are not unified and both notations are still used.

There are some inns and facilities that use different designations, which may make you feel uneasy as if they were the names of different places, but there are no major differences between the two places, so there is no need to worry.

Perhaps to prevent confusion, the name is now often written in hiragana as "Yufuin ", and the name actually displayed on the station building at JR Yufuin Station is also written as "Yufuin "!
