Full of charm of Tobe ware "Shape for the future "

"Shape for the Future "is a movie released in 2021.
The main characters are a father and son, both potters of Tobe Pottery, a well-known traditional craft in the town of Tobe, Ehime Prefecture. The story is about the restoration of the bond between parent and child by making an Olympic torch stand out of Tobe Pottery.
The director is Kenichi Omori, who has directed many films set in Ehime, including "Setouchi Kaizoku Monogatari ""Umisuzume ".

To the south of Matsuyama City, the capital of Ehime Prefecture, lies the town of Tobe. It is a small town in the mountains, but it is a thriving pottery production center, "called Tobeyaki ". Events related to pottery are held regularly and the town is crowded with visitors.
The southern part of the area is mountainous, with mountain streams and other natural scenery abounding.

"Ryusei Kiln Appears as "Kiyoshi Kiln

In the film, the main character Ryusei (Atsushi Ito) makes pottery "Ryusei Kiln "named Kiyoshi Kiln.
The pottery produced at the Kiyoshigama kiln is a pure white porcelain with vivid indigo painting that is unique.
Ms. Hiromi Yamada, the artist who paints these items, is a nationally designated female traditional craftswoman.
When I saw the hue of this porcelain, I thought it was similar to Arita-yaki porcelain from Saga Prefecture. In fact, Kimio Yamada (Hiromi's husband), the kiln owner of Kiyoshigama, was a graduate of the Ceramics Department of Saga Prefecture's Arita Technical High School.

Monuments actually made Onan

The monument is located next to the Tobe Ware Traditional Industry Hall in Onan, Tobe Town, and was actually built as an Olympic torch stand in the movie.
It is 4 meters high and, of course, made of ceramic. It is made up of several cup-like ceramic pieces stacked on top of each other, representing a flame burning in the air.
It is the heart of the story, so fans will not want to miss it.

Incidentally, a miniature of it is in the first floor lobby of the Tomochi Town Hall. It would be fun to see it as well.

Calligraphy Girls' Ministry: Our Koshien

Many people are now familiar with "Performance Calligraphy ". On a large sheet of paper (4m x 6m) spread out, several members (no more than 12) hold large brushes and write with them to the accompaniment of music. Sometimes they clap their hands, sometimes they dance, and some teams try to express the breadth of their calligraphy by using colorful ink colors or adding pictures.

This was started by the calligraphy club of Ehime Mishima High School. The members of the club began to perform it in the town's shopping district and other places. Eventually, this became known to a local TV station.
This city of Shikokuchuo has long flourished as a town of paper, and although the paper industry is the main industry, the town has never been very active. However, when a TV crew saw the calligraphy performance, they were convinced that it would be an event that would enliven the town, and they closely followed the Mishima High School Calligraphy Club.

The nationwide broadcast generated such a huge response that NTV began holding "Calligraphy Girls Koshien ", and later, using the Ehime Mishima High School Calligraphy Club as a model, produced a film called "Calligraphy Girls! Our Koshien "film was produced.
Even today, the "National High School Calligraphy Performance Championship "is held in Shikokuchuo City every year from late July to early August, with participating schools coming from all over Japan, and each time the venue is filled to overflowing with spectators who cannot fit in the venue.

The synopsis of the film is as follows
Satoko (Riko Narumi), whose father is a calligrapher, was the head of her high school's calligraphy club, but she constantly clashed with other club members over her approach to calligraphy. Under such circumstances, the teacher in charge of the club went on maternity leave, and Ikezawa (Nobuaki Kaneko) was put in charge as a temporary advisor. However, he has no interest in teaching at all and criticizes Satoko's calligraphy.
One day, when Ikezawa performs writing to music, Satoko does not approve of his performance, saying it is an evil way, but Kiyomi (Mitsuki Takahata), the vice president, on the contrary, likes it and practices it while listening to music at club activities (I don't think the song is "紅 "by X JAPAN). Satoko is not amused by Kiyomi's behavior and gets into a fight with her. Kiyomi then started practicing calligraphy alone in the park.
In the midst of all this, Kiyomi's home stationery store is to close. Satoko gets back together with Kiyomi and decides to give a calligraphy performance to liven up the closing sale of the stationery store...

The importance of facing up to difficulties, the preciousness of friends, and the problem of the decline of towns in rural areas, which seems to be everywhere "and which we might give up on ", are some of the hints that can be found in this work.

This park is located on a hill in Shikokuchuo City and offers a panoramic view of the city. Since calligraphy performances were banned in the calligraphy club room, Kiyomi was practicing alone in this park when Satoko and Kana showed up, and it was here, in Mishima Park, that the calligraphy club was launched and became a key location in the story.

Loneliness in a small town "Main Street "Naka-dori Shopping Street

The shopping street was used as a symbol of "town revitalization "to boost the local shopping district. Kiyomi's parents' stationery store was used as the actual "store called Handicraft Salon Yucca ". In front of this store, the girls gave their first calligraphy performance as the Shikoku Chuo High School Calligraphy Club, which led to the "Calligraphy Performance Koshien "

This museum is the pride of Shikokuchuo City, the city of paper. The history of paper and the process of making paper are conveyed in detail, and all kinds of paper products are exhibited. Among the exhibits are calligraphy written by the winning school of the "Calligraphy Performance Koshien ".

summary

Many of Ehime's works are very realistic, capturing the current situation and real faces of the people in the towns where they are set. There are also many good films that also highlight the lives and lifestyles of the people living there. If you actually visit the setting of the film, you can feel as if the characters are about to appear, and you can imagine that the characters must have lived in that place. Perhaps it is only when you actually visit the setting of a story that you can understand the work.
If you have a chance, I hope you will visit Ehime Prefecture and experience the setting of the story.
