Terraced rice paddies at Hoshitoge

The terraced rice paddies of Hoshitouge (Hoshitouge) are a terraced rice paddy field area that has been selected as one of the 100 best places to visit "and ".

Niigata, a rice-producing region, has many spots with spectacular views of terraced rice paddies.
One of the most popular of these terraced rice paddies is located in Matsudai, Tokamachi City.
About 200 rice fields, large and small, spread out on the slopes like scales, presenting a view from time to time.

Spring, early summer, and late fall are the best times to see the rice paddies filled with water. The water in the rice paddies reflects the surroundings like a mirror "and the mirror "becomes a very beautiful sight when it catches the sunlight.

Sea of clouds can also be seen early in the morning during early summer and early fall. This can only be seen under the right weather conditions, but the sea of clouds over the terraced rice paddies in the quiet early morning is a fantastic and moving sight.

In early winter, you can see terraced rice paddies covered with snow, and you can enjoy the scenery of each season. It is a spectacular spot that you will want to visit again and again.

It is easy to sightsee because there is a parking lot and a well-maintained place to view them. However, the terraced rice paddies are farmland and private property, so please enjoy them with good manners. Do not enter areas you are not allowed to enter, and do not leave trash behind.

Fukushima Lagoon

Fukushima Lagoon is a lake located east of Niigata City. With an area of 260 hectares, it is the largest lake in Niigata Prefecture among lagoons (kata: lakes and swamps formed after separation from the open sea).

"It is one of the most natural places in Japan, selected as one of the 100 best natural spots in Japan ""and one of the 100 best scenic spots in Niigata ""and one of the 100 best places for recreation ". More than 220 species of wild birds and 470 species of plants have been identified in the area.

It is home to a large number of precious plants and animals, including the great bustard, a national natural treasure, and the onibasu, an aquatic plant with leaves up to two meters long. And as a wintering ground for swans and great tits, it is called the best bird paradise in Japan, and is a popular spot for many bird lovers.

In spring, the rape blossom fields spreading all over the area are a highlight. The Gozu mountain range is also reflected on the surface of the lake, showing the majestic beauty of nature in each season along with birds and flowers.

I recommend the sightseeing and exchange facility "Mizu no Eki View Fukushima Lagoon ", which is located right next door and offers a panoramic view of Fukushima Lagoon from its third floor.

Kiyotsu Gorge

Kiyotsukyo (Kiyotsu Gorge) is one of the three major gorges in Japan, known together with Kurobe Gorge and Osugi Gorge.
Designated as Joshinetsu Kogen National Park in September 1949, it is also a treasure house of academic materials.

It is cut along the Kiyotsu River flowing through the mountainous area of Tokamachi City, and its large rock walls form one of the most V-shaped grand canyons in the country.

The view of the rock surface, which looks like a huge sculpture, and the clear rapids of the Kiyotsu River is very dynamic and impressive.

If you walk through the Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel, you can see its magnificent scenery up close from four viewing platforms. It is especially popular during the fall foliage season, when many tourists visit.

Ryugakubo Pond

Ryugakubo Pond is known as "the pond that never gets muddy ". The pond is constantly fed by an abundance of spring water, which keeps the water very clean. 43,000 tons of water fills the pond each day and is replaced by another 43,000 tons of water each day.

It has long been used by the local people not only as a source of water for daily life, but also as an object of worship. It is a very sacred pond where a festival is held every July at a nearby shrine.

The origin of the name Ryugakubo comes from a legend that the water was given by the dragon god.
Its mysterious emerald green scenery makes you feel as if you can cleanse your mind as well.
It is also popular as drinking water and has been selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan "" . Fishing for water is free, so bringing your own bottle is recommended.

Mya arenaria oonogai (subspecies of soft-shelled turtle)

Onogame is a huge monolith protruding from the sea. It is located on the Sotokaifu Coast in the northernmost part of Sado Island. "It is a very large rock that looks like a small mountain, rated two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japon ".

The most recommended time to visit is from late May to early June.
Onogame is also home to one of Japan's largest colonies of the tobishima kanzo, which blooms widely around the area during this time of year. These pretty yellow-orange flowers grow only on cliffs near the sea, and it is said that there are only two places in Japan where they can be seen.

Around mid-June, "the Sado Kanzo Festival "is held, featuring traditional Sado performing arts such as harukoma and onidaiko.

From the top of Ono Turtle, you can see an island called "Futatsugame (二ツツ亀) ". Located a short distance from the main island, the island looks like two turtles. The view from Onokame is very attractive, including a beautiful sunset over the Sea of Japan.
