[Hokkaido ]Want to visit in the summer! 9 Outing Spots

2023-07-26

Many people may be planning a trip to Hokkaido this year, as various restrictions have finally been removed and they can enjoy a summer vacation. Hokkaido may have a strong image of winter, but summer is also a great season to see the lively trees and sparkling sea. Let us introduce you to some of the best places to visit in Hokkaido in summer!

Author of this article

Cape Kamui (Shakotan Town)

"Shakotan Blue "is one of the most spectacular capes in Hokkaido, with a brilliant sea called Shakotan Blue "and Kamui Cape ". The water is so clear that you can see the rocks in the sea, and the view of the sea is as clear as the Mediterranean Sea and the color of Okinawa. The transparency is especially high in summer, and the view of the cobalt blue sea is stunning.

Another impressive point is the contrast between the dynamic of the cape and the sea, where greenery spreads across the sheer cliff topography. In summer, visitors can walk through a beautiful green scene with lush green grass and pink and yellow flowers, while overlooking the ocean behind it.

From the tip of the cape, you can see the strange rock "Kamui Iwa "standing in the sea. The view of the 41m high rock towering into the sea is breathtaking.

From the parking lot to the tip of the cape, you will need to walk about 20 minutes one way along a promenade with ups and downs. There are many stairs, and the footing is not good in some places, so it is recommended that you wear solid shoes such as sneakers.

At the souvenir shop "Kamui Banya "in the parking lot, you can have "Shakotan Blue Soft ". It is a refreshing soft-serve ice cream with a hint of mint flavor.

Also, sea urchin is in season in Shakotan in summer, so please try sea urchin together with Cape Kamui!

Sapporo Odori Beer Garden (Sapporo)

Sapporo Odori Beer Garden "is a summer tradition in Sapporo, and the citizens look forward to it every year. " Due to the new Corona, the event has been cancelled or held on a reduced scale for the past three years, but this year it will finally be held normally, and is sure to be a lively event!

"The Sapporo Odori Beer Garden "takes place in Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo, stretching approximately 1 km from east to west. Although it is the largest beer garden in Japan with over 10,000 seats available, it is so popular that it is difficult to find an empty seat.

Enjoying a beer with friends in the refreshing Sapporo heat at Odori Park, an urban oasis with a sense of openness, is an experience that is hard to find in other prefectures. It is sure to be an unforgettable Hokkaido summer memory!

Hokuryu Town Sunflower Village (Hokuryu Town)

Hokuryu Town is located about 2 hours drive northeast of central Sapporo and about 1 hour drive west of central Asahikawa. "Hokuryu-cho Sunflower Village "is one of the largest sunflower fields in Japan, covering an area of 23 hectares, with approximately 2 million sunflowers in full bloom.

"The beauty of the sunflower field at the Hokuryu-cho Sunflower Village "is not only the impressive number of sunflowers, but also the fact that most of the sunflowers are in bloom at about the same time. In other large sunflower fields, although there are many sunflowers, they often bloom at different times of the year. However, at "Hokuryu-cho Sunflower Village ", the sunflowers are in full bloom almost simultaneously in early August, when they are at their best.

The scenery is sure to be photogenic!

Toyako Long-Run Fireworks Display (Toyako Town)

Lake Toya Onsen is one of the best hot spring resorts in Hokkaido, about a two-hour drive southwest of central Sapporo. Lake Toya stretches out before your eyes, and every night from the end of April to the end of October, a huge fireworks display is launched into the sky.

Held every night from 8:45 p.m. for about 20 minutes, the fireworks display features about 450 shots. You can watch them from the lakeside or while boarding the Toya Lake cruise ship "Espoir ". However, my top recommendation is to watch them from the open-air bath! After a delicious meal, the time spent watching the fireworks while soaking in the open-air baths is sure to be an unforgettable and moving experience.

Blue Cave (Otaru City)

The "Blue Cave "is famous in Italy and Okinawa. In fact, there is one in Otaru! Located only about 20 minutes by car from downtown Otaru, you can enjoy a cruise in the mysterious blue sea inside the cave.

Inside the cave, the sea surface appears to glow blue due to the effect of natural light shining in. It is a mysterious sight that can only be seen where various natural conditions are met, such as the unique topography formed by sea water erosion and the degree of reflection from the sea bottom.

Blue Cave cruises are available from April through October, but Hokkaido's waters can be colder than you might imagine. The best season is during the warm summer months.

"Facility Information "
Facility name: Ao no Dokutsu (Blue Cave)

Shusano-Oka (Asahikawa City)

It is a hilly area located in Asahikawa City, about 15 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport. It was previously unknown to non-locals because it was a hidden scenic spot with no prominent signage, but it spread by word of mouth and became a hot topic when it was used as a filming location for the popular TV drama "Galileo, 2nd season ".

"From Shujitsu Hill ", a panoramic view of the Daisetsuzan and Tokachidake mountain ranges, the towns of Asahikawa and Biei, and vast fields spreads out before your eyes as far as the eye can see, a panorama typical of Hokkaido. "The road to Shujitsu no Oka "is a single road with many ups and downs where you can enjoy the view of the mountains towering before your eyes, making driving an enjoyable experience.

"Facility Information "
Facility name: Shuzu no Oka (Hill of Shuzu)
Address: Nishikagura Shizumi, Asahikawa, Hokkaido, 078-8383, Japan

White Road (Wakkanai City)

A "white road "runs between green pastures, stretching toward the blue sky and the sea. The contrast of colors is spectacular and "like a place not in Japan "and has been talked about on SNS. The last 3 km of the "Soya Hills Course "of the "Wakkanai Footpath ", which is a walking course, is the "White Path ".

The reason why the road is white is because it is covered with crushed scallop shells. The path was originally made of crushed scallop shells, a specialty of Wakkanai, to make effective use of the large amount of scallops that were being disposed of. The footpath had three positive effects: it reduced the burden on the feet of footpath walkers, it had an inhibitory effect on weed growth, and it became a tourist attraction.

It is recommended to visit in summer, when the blue of the sky and sea, the green of the pastures, and the "white road "are each at their most distinct and beautiful.

"Facility Information "
Facility name: White Road (Shiroi Michi)
Residence:〒098-6755 Soya, Soya-mura, Wakkanai-shi, Hokkaido
Hours of operation: 24 hours
*The road is usually closed during the winter season from mid-November to late April.

Oloron Line (Otaru City - Wakkanai City)

It is commonly known as the "Oloron Line ", a 380-kilometer road that runs along the Sea of Japan between Otaru City and Wakkanai City. It is a driving route filled with Hokkaido's typical attractions such as the sea, wilderness and pastures, and remote islands visible in the distance, and is immensely popular among bikers as a "road "they want to ride at least once in their lives.

In particular, the route from Teshio Town to Wakkanai City offers a series of exotic, heavenly, and magnificent scenery that can be seen only here in Japan. The Ottonloui wind farm with its rows of large windmills (Horonobe Town), the endless pastureland (Toyotomi Town), and the otherworldly scenery with nothing but sky, sea, and grass (Sarobetsu Town) are just a few of the sights to see.

Summer is by far the best time to drive the Oloron Line. As a road in Hokkaido, it is not uncommon to lose sight of the road ahead due to blizzards in winter. Also, even in mid-summer in July and August, the maximum temperature north of Teshio rarely rises above 25°C (77°F), and is often below 20°C (68°F). This makes it a great drive from outside of Hokkaido as a summer getaway.

Bihoro Pass (Bihoro Town)

Located about 2 hours north of central Kushiro by car, this mountain pass offers a spectacular view. Lake Kussharo below, Mt. Io-zan (Mt. Iwo) and the Shiretoko mountain range can be seen in the distance. In summer, the entire area is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a refreshing landscape.

The views from the pass are spectacular, but the road leading to the pass is a winding road that overlooks Lake Kussharo and is a driving road. It is a driving road with a spectacular view that attracts not only tourists but also bikers from all over the country.
