Roan Matsuda Sasayama

First, I would like to introduce you to "Roan Matsuda Sasayama, a restaurant tucked away deep in the mountains of Tanba Sasayama City, about 25 minutes by car from JR Sasayamaguchi Station. " Here, you can enjoy refined soba noodles and seasonal dishes using local ingredients in a wonderful location surrounded by mountains on all sides. The menu is a course only, but you can enjoy dishes that have been meticulously calculated with attention to both taste and appearance.

Interior view reminiscent of an old private house

Upon entering the restaurant, you will find a spacious area with large pillars and seats separated by traditional shoji screens, giving the impression of an old private home. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a grandmother's house in the countryside, and you will feel as if you have stepped back in time a long time ago.

Soba is the main dish in the course menu

The restaurant offers only one seasonal course menu for both lunch and dinner. The main dish is Soba (buckwheat noodles), and you can enjoy various tastes of Soba, from Jyuwari Soba, which allows you to fully enjoy the aroma of Soba, to Rural Soba, which leaves a little texture of Soba nuts. "Soba "alone allows you to enjoy many different tastes. The palate-cleansing "Temakizushi Soba "is a rare dish that can be enjoyed only here.

cavern

The next restaurant with a trademark kayabuki roof, located about 20 minutes by car from JR Shinoyamaguchi Station, is "Irori Ryori Iwaya ". Here, you can enjoy botan nabe, one of the gibier dishes. In front of the thatched-roof restaurant, there is a water wheel spinning in front of the restaurant, and you can enjoy an extraordinary space where time seems to have stopped, matching the rich natural scenery around the restaurant.

Dining around the hearth

The inside of the restaurant is like a large earthen floor, with sunken hearths standing all around. "Botan-nabe "may give you the impression that it is cold to eat botan-nabe in a thatched-roof restaurant during the winter season, but the hearth is surrounded by a heated floor.

Botan-nabe with fresh wild boar meat

You can also have peony hot pot using wild boar meat from Tamba at this restaurant. In the Tamba area, wild boars that have grown up eating Tamba's chestnuts and grains are served instead of farmed boars. Therefore, it is not fatty and can be enjoyed lightly.

Botan-nabe specialty restaurant Botan-tei

Another restaurant where you can enjoy botan-nabe is "Botan-tei ", located about 10 minutes by car from JR Shinoyamaguchi Station and marked by a wild boar objet d'art. This restaurant specializes in botan-nabe and is open only from October to March, when botan-nabe is in season.

A boar statue welcomes you.

At the entrance of the restaurant, you will be greeted by a boar in white. The menu consists of only two dishes: botan nabe and udon noodles with botan nabe broth, but most customers order the botan nabe. You can enjoy this special hot pot using ribs and loin parts from carefully selected wild boars. You can compare the different parts of the wild boar and enjoy them. The broth used for the nabe is also carefully selected, using miso with chestnuts, a specialty of Tamba, for a mellow flavor.

Harmony of fatty boar meat and miso

As you continue to eat, the vegetables soak up the broth in which the fat from the wild boar meat has melted away, creating a luxurious taste. Udon noodles are the perfect finish to this dish. Please enjoy the sweetness of the vegetables and chestnuts, as well as the udon that has absorbed the fat from the wild boar meat.

Quamompe

Next, we will introduce an authentic Italian restaurant "Quamompe ", tucked away in the mountains of Sasayama City. This restaurant is famous for its authentic pizza baked in a pizza oven set up in front of the restaurant. The store opens at 10:30 a.m., but we recommend that you arrive at the store early, as there are people who line up from the morning to get a taste of the pizza.

Authentic pizza baked in a pizza oven

The signature dish is authentic pizza baked in a stone oven. The crispy edges, chewy dough, and melted cheese all intertwine to create an impressive flavor. When the weather gets warmer, you can enjoy your meal on the terrace while admiring the natural surroundings.

Excellent pasta made with fresh ingredients.

Although pizza is the only thing that attracts attention at this restaurant, the pasta dishes are also authentic in taste. The pasta menu uses the freshest seasonal ingredients and allows you to fully enjoy the flavor of the ingredients. If you have room in your stomach, we recommend that you try both the pizza and pasta dishes.

Konishi's bread

From here, we would like to introduce some bread and sweets stores. Tanba is famous for "black beans ", and bread using these Tanba black beans can be found at "Konishi's Bread ", located about 5 minutes away from the castle town of Sasayama Castle. Founded in 1893, this long-established store has been loved by Sasayama residents for more than 120 years.

Bread made with black beans from Tanba is popular

The most popular product is still "authentic black bean bread "using black beans from Tanba. Tanba black beans are cooked for 8-9 hours, kneaded into sweetened bread, and baked. The slight sweetness of the black beans and the fluffy texture of the bread make a perfect match.

The store is accessible from Sasayama Castle and is very popular, so it is often sold out during the tourist season. If you want to be sure to get it, we recommend that you visit the store in the morning. If you cannot forget the taste and want to try it again, you can also buy it at the online store.

Yukioka City Langbei Confectionery

Next up is "Ichirobei Yukioka Confectionery ", a store specializing in cheesecakes made with black beans and chestnuts from Tanba. The store has a cute atmosphere and is located in the castle town, about a 5-minute walk from Sasayama Castle. Inside there is a café space where you can rest your tired feet while sightseeing.

Cheesecake using Tamba's specialty black beans is popular

Once inside the store, the showcase is filled with a variety of sweets made from chestnuts and black beans, Tanba's specialty. A particularly popular item is a cheesecake made with Tamba black beans. The firm texture of the black beans and the smooth yet firm cheesecake are a perfect match, and you can eat as much as you want.

We also recommend the mouthwatering Mont Blanc.

Another popular item is Mont Blanc made with chestnuts produced in Tanba. Montblanc is unusual for a cheesecake specialty store, but expectations are high because it is made with local chestnuts. The chestnut paste has the texture of a paste made from the chestnuts themselves, and is well known for its natural sweetness, so be sure to try it.

Daifukudo Main Store

The last store I would like to introduce is "Daifukudo Main Store ". This is a Japanese confectionery store located right next to the Tanba Sasayama City Hall and within walking distance from Sasayama Castle. It is a well-established and famous store that has been supporting Tamba Sasayama since the Meiji era and has been providing wagashi for more than 120 years. The store always has more than 25 varieties of products made from Tanba Sasayama ingredients.

Black bean daifuku, made with large black beans kneaded into it, is popular

One of our most popular products "is Kuro-Mame Daifuku ". Not only do we use black beans from Tanba, but we are also particular about the azuki beans used for the red bean paste and use azuki beans from Tanba Sasayama. The freshly pounded rice cake is kneaded with large black beans that have been cooked to a fluffy consistency, giving it an outstanding visual impact. The smooth sweetness of the red bean paste and the exquisite saltiness of the black beans match each other, making your taste buds wow.

Furthermore, in summer, shaved ice is also available. The shaved ice is made from specially selected ice purchased from Nara, resulting in a fluffy shaved ice. With a wide variety of flavors of syrups, you are sure to find a flavor to your liking. A cup of cold shaved ice and a cup of tea is a great way to cool off from the summer heat, so stop by while sightseeing.
