Iwama Shimashita Bridge
The Shimanto River, said to be the last clear stream in Japan, has 47 sunken bridges. The most famous is the Iwama Chinkatsu Bridge, which is so famous that it has been used on posters.
Since this is a bridge for living, please do not disturb the people who live there, and please do not sightsee. There is a parking lot in front of the bridge, and you can walk across the bridge. You can take beautiful pictures from a little distance or up close.
Sightseeing houseboats are also available.
There are many activities along the Shimanto River, so it is possible to see the bridge from the river side. There are also sightseeing boats, so you can see the sunken bridge from a sightseeing boat.
Because sunken bridges were originally built with the expectation that they would sink, they have no guardrails or other structures to reduce water resistance. The attitude of accepting nature and coexisting with it is what makes the sunken bridge what it is. This is why the scenery of the sunken bridge is so beautiful. Please go and take pictures of sunken bridges in Kochi where a lot of nature remains.
