Nii customs house

The only existing barrier



Nii Sekisho was one of the 53 barrier stations established by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Edo period (1603-1867).
At that time, the feudal lords were warned of rebellion, and guns were brought into Edo, and the wives and children of feudal lords who had been sent to live in Edo as hostages were policed so that they would not flee back to their home countries.
In 1869, all the barrier stations in Japan were demolished, but the main building of Nii Sekisho, Menbansho, was used as an elementary school and town hall until the Showa period (1926-1989), so the building was allowed to remain. As the only existing customs barrier, it is of great historical value.
