Kusatsu Onsen, which has been healing people as one of the best hot springs in Japan, has a traditional custom called "Yumomi ".
"Yumomi "was conceived as a way to cool hot springs without diluting their efficacy.
You can appreciate such "yumomi "at "hot noyu "
The Attenoyu show is held every morning from 9:30 to 16:30 for six performances a day. After the opening movie is shown, visitors can watch the Kusatsu-bushi and Kusatsu Yumomi Uta dances and yumomi (hot-spring water massage).
Every Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 11:30 to 14:00, visitors can experience yumomi under the guidance of the Yumomi Girls.
You can also take a commemorative photo with a yumomi board, so if your timing is right, please visit the museum!

Kapoksan Baikeng (1938-), mountain in north India, famous for its white pottery
Kusatsu-Shiranesan, with an elevation of 2,160 meters and one of the world's most highly acidic crater lakes.
The crater lake on its Shirane summit is called "Yugama ".
The contrast between the white, desolate summit area and the emerald green yugama (hot water pot) is almost otherworldly and mysterious.
The water of the lake is a mysterious emerald green color, and the contrast with the surrounding white mountain surface is captivating!
However, following the raising of the eruption alert level at Kusatsu-Shiranesan, access to the crater area had been prohibited since June 2014.
Later in June 2017, the eruption alert level was lowered and we were able to see "Yugama "again, but once again, entry restrictions have made it impossible to enter the mountain again today.
If you are able to enter the mountain at the right time, please try to climb the mountain again!
It is a 20-minute walk on the trail to the yugama at the summit. Shiranesan was erupted in 1882, and the summit area is covered with volcanic rocks.
As a result, the mountain surface is white, and there are areas where there is no vegetation.
Please pay attention to the scenery and the changes in the ground as you climb!
Also, please note that the road is partially closed in winter.

It is said that the shrine was originally located on Mt. Shirane, but when it was upgraded to a township shrine, the shrine was built at its current location.
A large prayer ema (votive picture tablet) is set up in the precincts of the temple, and visitors are free to write their wishes on it.
Other attractions include the monument to Kusatsu's oldest public bathhouse "Washinoyu "!
After climbing the stone steps, you can look out over the streets of the hot spring resort, and the view is quite impressive.
Surrounded by trees, the temple grounds are a world apart from the touristy hot spring resort area, where you can enjoy a moment of tranquility.

Kouzenji Temple

It is an ancient temple with a history of more than 800 years since its foundation, and in recent years it has come to be recognized as one of the best power spots in Kusatsu. It is visited by many worshippers every year.
Kosenji also enshrines "Late Blooming Nyorai ", a Buddha who came into the world after 300 years and is believed to be beneficial to those who want to bloom one more flower in the future.
There are also accompanying omikuji, such as the late-blooming nyorai omikuji (300 yen) and the Hana no tsutsu mikuji (300 yen), which contains mizuhiki flowers, which you can enjoy drawing in the middle of the hot spring resort area.
There are many cultural assets designated by the town of Kusatsu in the precincts of the temple, including the Fish Basket Kannon, the Shakado Hall, and the Yoritomo Palace, all of which stand stately in the atmosphere of serenity.
Other things such as "Yusen Kannon ""Yuzendo ""Yubatumi Benzaiten ""Kobayashi Issa's Phrase Monument "and other things that add warmth to the Kusatsu Onsen atmosphere and Japanese folk tales can be seen quietly beyond the history, so even history buffs can fully enjoy sightseeing.
Even if you are not familiar with the history, if you climb high up the stone steps, you can feel the warm, lying atmosphere of the hot spring fields and just enjoy the scenery, which is a wonderful feeling.

Yubatake
The large amount of hot spring water gushing out of "Yubatake (yubatake) "is the very symbol of Kusatsu Onsen.
It did not have a fixed name until the Meiji period (1868-1912), and was called something like a hot water pond.
Eventually, "yudoi (yudoi) "were built and hot spring water was harvested, hence the name yubatake (hot spring field).
It took its current form in 1975. "Art is an explosion! "of Taro Okamoto redesigned the entire Yubata at the request of the town.
Yubatake is divided into three areas.
At first, a pond of boiling water with a hot spring called "御汲上げの湯 ".
Next is the cooling zone, where boiled water is poured into seven hot water troughs to cool.
The last is "Yudaki "which falls into a pond at the bottom of the cliff.
"Gokumi-no-yu "springs from a pond called "Yubata-source "is one of the six main sources in Kusatsu.
The square frame assembled in the pond is where hot water was pumped up for the 8th shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, in 1726, and from here it was transported to Edo Castle. The wooden frame itself is said to be 300 years old, assembled for the purpose of pumping hot water.
4,400 liters of hot water per minute gushes from the hot spring fields. The bottom of the pond is pure white as hot water flowers have settled there for more than 1,000 years.
The hot water, with a source temperature of 55.7 degrees Celsius, is highly acidic with a pH of 2.08.
Even so, the Yubatake source is reputed to be the most pleasant to the touch hot water in Kusatsu, and is pumped up by a corrosion-resistant titanium pump and distributed to about 50 of the more than 100 hot spring hotels in Kusatsu.
Kusatsu's hot water has long been known for its high bactericidal properties.
A study by Gunma University has shown that hot water from a hot-spring spa kills 99 percent of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in just one minute.
So, the newest facility, just completed in February 2021, is located on the Hotel Ichii side of Yubatake: "Tearashinoyu ".
The mildly pleasant 40°C water is 100% from the Yubatake source.
The new trend in Kusatsu is to wash your hands here before eating your way through the hot spring area!
Nishi no Kawara Dori
The main street stretches from Yubatake.
"Nishi-no-kawahara-dori "leading from Yubatake, located in the center of the hot spring resort area, is a great place to take a stroll.
Various stores are lined up one after another, offering buns, onsen tamago (hot spring eggs), ice cream, kushiyaki (skewers), and more, allowing visitors to enjoy eating and shopping.
Walking along the street while listening to the sound of geta (wooden clogs), you will feel that you have come to a hot spring resort!
There are many souvenir shops and Instagram-worthy spots, so enjoy shopping while you visit the hot springs.
Especially recommended as an Instagram spot is "Kusatsu Glass Storehouse No. 2 ".
It is highly recommended to see the post boxes that were once used in the town of Kusatsu, as they provide a very tasteful and atmospheric atmosphere!

The open-air baths are one of the largest in Japan at 500 square meters when the men's and women's baths are combined, and are popular for their overwhelming sense of openness and relaxation.

There is also a footbath on the grounds of the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, the only public entrance to Kusatsu Onsen without a train station.
The motif may have been inspired by a resting place nestled in a quiet forest, surrounded by white birches.
The footbath has a somewhat stylish appearance that blends in with the atmosphere of Kusatsu Onsen, and its wooden exterior is a far cry from its wooden counterpart. You can use it to acclimate your hands and feet when you arrive at Kusatsu Onsen, or to kill some time while waiting for the bus to take you home from Kusatsu Onsen!
