When planning a trip to Hokkaido, "Hokkaido is so large that you are not sure how far you can go, and you may think, "Let's just go to Sapporo for now! "Many people may think that Sapporo is the best place to visit. However, it would be a waste to end your Hokkaido trip with only sightseeing in Sapporo! As a native of Sapporo, I have enjoyed many day-trips from Sapporo and recommend the following "day-trip driving spots from Sapporo ".

Noboribetsu Onsen, Tomakomai area

Nationally renowned as one of Hokkaido's leading hot spring resorts, "Noboribetsu Onsen "can be reached from central Sapporo in about 2.5 hours by ordinary road or 1.5 hours by expressway. On the way to Noboribetsu Onsen, it is recommended to taste the exquisite gourmet food of Tomakomai City and Shiraoi Town.

Platt Shokudo (Tomakomai City)

Located right in front of Tomakomai Fishing Port, this cafeteria is part of the "Plat Minato Market ", where cafeterias, fishmongers, and grocery stores gather. You can taste such gourmet delicacies as hokki-gai, Tomakomai's largest catch in Japan, home-made sun-dried hokke (hokke), and fresh seafood rice bowls that only a port town can offer.

Among them, I highly recommend you try "Hokki Curry ". The sweetness of the fresh hokki is infused into the curry roux, and the crunchy texture of the hokki is irresistibly delicious! Some of my friends say "that they don't like other hokki dishes, but they eat a big bowl of this hokki curry ". It's such a great curry. It is a menu that is hard to find in other areas!

Mothers Plus (Shiraoi-cho)

This store sells fresh eggs directly from its own poultry farm, where chickens are fed with natural feed and water and raised on flatland, as well as sweets made from these eggs. Open-air museum of Ainu culture "Upopoi Ethnic Symbiosis Symbolic Space "is located about 2 km from the museum.

Sweets such as cream puffs made with fresh eggs, "egg pudding ", "egg sponge cake "are all delicious and rich in egg flavor.

"Mothers Plus "was originally a small store, but was extensively renovated in April 2020 to become a beautiful modern building that resembles a museum. "It won the Good Design Award in 2020 as a new rural landscape where animals and humans coexist "and has become an unexpected installation spot.

"Next to Mothers Plus "is the egg diner "Yoso Shokudo ", where you can enjoy oyakodon (chicken and egg bowl) and ogokakegohan set menus that use plenty of fresh eggs.

Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Noboribetsu City)

Noboribetsu Onsen is the largest source of hot springs in Hokkaido "Noboribetsu Onsen "is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Hokkaido. Noboribetsu Onsen is rich in natural hot spring water with a natural gush of 10,000 tons per day (about 5,000 drums), and is also called the department store of hot spring "because of the many types of spring water ", making it a rare spot in the world. Volcanic gases erupt from the reddish-brown rock surfaces and yellowish-gray rock crevices, and the smell of sulfur fills the air.

"Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Noboribetsu Hell Valley) "is also attractive because it changes its appearance depending on the time of day and the season. Every night from sunset to 9:30 p.m., the valley is lit up and visitors can enjoy the fantastic scenery of nature illuminated by the lights. The scenery that changes with the seasons is also attractive, with autumn leaves turning red in fall and snow in winter.

And when you visit "Noboribetsu Jigokudani ", you should also visit "Oyunuma River Footbath ", located in the forest about 1 km from Jigokudani. Many people visit only Jigokudani and return home, but this is a recommended spot that you should definitely stop by!

About 1.5 km up the road from Jigokudani, "Oyunuma "is a swamp made of acidic hot spring water that flows into a river, which you can enjoy as a natural footbath. Visitors can soak in the natural footbath while feeling the negative ions of the forest, and enjoy a truly healing experience. It is a well-known spot, so it is nice that it is not that crowded.

Yoichi-cho, where the "Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery "became famous through the morning drama "Masan ", can be reached from central Sapporo in about 1.5 hours by ordinary road or about 1 hour by expressway. Note that it is pronounced "yo↓ich↑ ", not "yo↑ichi↓ "! Nikka Whisky Hokkaido Factory Yoichi Distillery (Yoichi Town)

You can visit the Whiskey Museum, a whiskey factory, and the home of Masataka and Rita Taketsuru, the couple who served as models for the main characters in the 2014 (2014) morning drama "Masan ".

Masataka Taketsuru produced the first domestic whiskey as an employee of the current Suntory. He later became independent and founded Nikka's predecessor, "Dainippon Juice Company "in Yoichi. The company chose Yoichi because of its abundance of high-quality water and a climate similar to that of Scotland, the home of whisky. Then, in 1940, they shipped the first Nikka Whisky and became known as "the father of Japanese whisky "in both name and reality. This facility allows visitors to learn and feel such history.

"One of the great things about Nikka Whisky Hokkaido Factory Yoichi Distillery "is that you can sample whisky! In the free tasting, you can try single malt Yoichi, Super Nikka, and apple wine. Cape Kamui (Shakotan Town)

"Shakotan Blue "is one of the most spectacular capes in Hokkaido. The transparency of the sea is so high that rocks in the sea can be seen, and the view of the cobalt blue sea like that of the Mediterranean Sea or Okinawa can be seen. The contrast between the dynamic of the cape and the sea, with its steep cliff topography and expanse of greenery, is also a moving point.

From the tip of the cape, you can see the strange rock "Kamui Iwa "standing in the sea. The view of the 41m high rock towering into the sea is breathtaking.

Misaki no You (Misaki no You) Shakotan

This day spa facility is located about 15 minutes by car from the parking lot of Cape Kamui. "The specialty of Cape Hot Spring Shakotan "is the open-air bath with a spectacular view of the Japan Sea, Cape Kamui, and Shakotan Cape in Shakotan. Especially at dusk, you will surely be impressed by the Sea of Japan dyed by the setting sun that fades into the distance.

The spring is a clear, slightly tepid carbonate spring that leaves the skin smooth after bathing. It also has a sauna where you can enjoy self-launge, which is becoming increasingly popular among sauna enthusiasts these days. After the sauna, visitors can take an outdoor air bath while looking down on the spectacular view, which is a must for sauna enthusiasts!

The facility has a spacious rest area and restaurant, where you can relax and enjoy a wide variety of meals.

Kakizaki Shoten (Yoichi Town)

The orange exterior of this long-established fish shop has been in business for over 70 years, and the first floor is a marketplace with fresh seafood purchased every morning, while the second floor is a cafeteria.

This diner is very popular among local residents and is a must-visit when visiting Yoichi! The menu offers a variety of fresh seafood dishes such as kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), uni-don (sea urchin rice bowl), grilled set menus with fatty fish, and boiled fish. There is also a menu of grilled fish and sashimi, so we recommend sharing the menu items you are interested in.

With local prices lower than those of restaurants and eateries in Sapporo and Otaru, the restaurant is popular not only with tourists from outside Hokkaido, but also with many local and domestic tourists. The restaurant is so crowded at lunchtime that the line extends all the way to the bottom of the stairs, so it is recommended to come early before lunch or after 2:00 p.m. However, since there are many seats and the turnover is quick, even if there is a line, you will often be seated earlier than expected.

From the parking lot to the tip of the cape, it is a 20-minute walk each way on a slightly up-and-down path. There are many stairs, and the footing is not good in some places, so it is recommended that you wear solid shoes such as sneakers.

At the souvenir shop "Kamui Banya "in the parking lot, you can have "Shakotan Blue Soft ". It is a refreshing soft-serve ice cream with a hint of mint flavor.

Hair enhancement

"Mashike-cho! "Mashike-cho (増毛町) is a town secretly famous for being mispronounced as It has become a sacred place of prayer for hair growth and is visited by people suffering from thinning hair, but it is also one of the largest catch of amaebi (sweet shrimp) in Japan. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to get there from central Sapporo by ordinary roads.

Ruins of the old Mashige Station

This is the site of Masumo Station, a terminus station on the JR Rumoi Main Line that was closed in December 2016. The station building was restored to its original size and the exterior was made to look similar to the time of its opening.

Inside the station building, there are exhibits on the history of the station and a souvenir store and restaurant featuring seafood, a specialty of the town of Mashige. Commemorative tickets reproducing tickets from the time of operation are "becoming popular as "a source of stories.

I once visited Masuge Station by train when it was in operation, and the tracks still remain as they were in those days, and I feel a sense of travel with the tracks extending to only one side, which is unique to a terminal station.

You can enjoy seafood specialties of a quality only a port town can offer, such as Kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) topped with plump sweet shrimp, Zangi (Japanese pickles), and Chirashi-zushi (sushi rice topped with sweet and fresh ingredients).

As a popular restaurant that attracts tourists from all over Hokkaido, it is often quite crowded during lunch hours on weekends and holidays. Popular dishes are often sold out early, so it is recommended to visit on weekdays when there is more time, or when the restaurant opens at 11:00 a.m.

Founded in 1882, it is the northernmost sake brewery in Japan. It is the representative sake brewery of Hokkaido and is well-known throughout the prefecture.

The interior of the brewery is reminiscent of the Meiji era. Visitors can sample 16 different types of sake, including limited-quantity local sake, new sake, and other valuable products unique to the brewery!

There is also a well-stocked store corner, selling local sake, amazake (sweet sake), sake kasu (sake lees), and other products made at the brewery, as well as Mashige specialties and Japanese knick-knacks.
