Kamigata Ukiyoe are Ukiyoe prints produced mainly in Osaka from the latter half of the Edo period to the early Meiji period (1868-1912), and are characterized by the fact that most of them depict actors in kabuki plays in Dotonbori, with few portraits of beautiful women or landscapes. Unlike Edo yakusha-e (portrayals of actors), these prints do not glorify the actors, but depict them with a human touch. Kamigata Ukiyo-e are highly valued overseas and are collected by museums around the world, including the British Museum and the California Museum, as "OSAKA PRINTS ". The Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum exhibits Kamigata Ukiyo-e from the museum's collection under a theme about every three months.
