Osaka Science Museum, Osaka, Japan

If you want to see a planetarium in Osaka City, your destination is the Osaka Science Museum. The Science Museum is located in Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, in an area with a high concentration of museums and other cultural facilities.

The optical planetarium projector at the Osaka Science Museum was renewed in 2019. It is now equipped with "Infinium Σ (Sigma)-OSAKA ", manufactured by Konica Minolta Planetarium, Inc. Utilizing the world's first supernova projector and voice recognition operation, it realistically reproduces all celestial phenomena seen on earth in one of the world's largest domes, measuring approximately 26.5 meters.

The most striking feature of the planetarium at the Osaka Science Museum is the abundance of programs. From right after the opening until closing time, "General Projection ", "Family Time ", "Curatorial Special ", "Special Projection "and other programs are shown throughout the day. Each session is limited to 300 people. Watching the different programs according to the time schedule will make you an expert on space and stars.

"The general projection "is designed for upper elementary school students and adults. "Saturn - A World of White Ice "and "Space Historia - 13.8 Billion Years, an Atomic Journey "are two programs that are shown several times a day each from August 30 to November 5, 2023.

"Family Time "is a program for toddlers to early elementary school-aged children and their parents. Parents and children can look up at the dome, search for stars, and experience a flight into space travel. The curators' "Starry Nights "and "Seasonal Nights "are also very interesting. "Seasonal Nights "in 2023 features "Animals in the Starry Sky "in April and May, "Tanabata-sama "in June and July, "Saturn in Wakka "in August and "The Moon "from September to November.

"The curatorial special "is shown on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 5:00 p.m. There are seven curators in charge of astronomy at the Science Museum, and they project planetariums with explanations based on their knowledge in their respective fields of expertise, such as meteors, the sun, fixed stars, galaxies and cosmology, observation, history, and weather.

"The special projection "is usually shown during the summer vacation mainly for upper elementary school students. It introduces many great tips for astronomical observation during summer vacation, such as how to find constellations, the moon and planets, and tips for observation.

In addition to the planetarium, the Osaka Science Museum offers "Science Show ". Live physics and chemistry experiments are demonstrated, allowing visitors to experience familiar scientific phenomena in a realistic way right in front of their eyes. "The program from August 30 to November 5, 2023 is Water Science ", where you can notice the mysterious phenomena that water presents. In the past, "Colorful Experiments with Acids and Alkalis ", "Long Molecules! Let's play with polymers "and "Chemistry of fireworks "were organized in the past. What is difficult to understand only in school classes can be impressed strongly and deeply at a glance.

The Science Museum offers not only hands-on programs, but also a wide range of exhibits: on the 4th floor, "Space and Its Discovery "; on the 3rd floor, "Chemistry Around Us "; on the 2nd floor, "Science with Kids "; and on the 1st floor, "Electricity and Energy ". The themes are elaborately designed to make science accessible to visitors.

The Osaka Science Museum is a facility that comprehensively explains not only astronomy but also various natural phenomena around us from the aspects of physics and chemistry. If you take a careful look around the planetarium and exhibits, you may find that your view of the world will change dramatically.

Sophia Sakai (Sakai City Education and Culture Center) Naka Bunka Kaikan (Sakai City)

Located in the Senboku region of Osaka Prefecture, Sakai City has the second largest population in the prefecture after Osaka City. "Sophia Sakai "is where you can see a planetarium. The dome, with seating for 166 people, features the highest standard of visuals using fulldome surround digital imaging equipment and realistic sound to reproduce the beautiful starry sky and the Milky Way in a realistic manner.

Sakai City's planetarium programs are not at all inferior to those of Osaka City. The programs are divided into three chronological groups: "general programs ", "family programs ", and "healing programs ".

"General programs "include programs with themes suited to the ages and interests of the audience. "Planetarium Chibi Maruko-chan: Enchanted by the Southern Cross ", "To the GRAND UNIVERSE music by Joe Hisaishi ", "Journey to the Stars: The World ", "Tracing the Starry Sky with Mucha "You can choose from exciting programs just by looking at their titles.

"Family programs "can be enjoyed by parents and children alike. "Tio the Ursa Minor - The 12 Constellations of the Zodiac ", "Yokai Watch ♪ SOS from Koma-san! Let's Go to the Black Hole ♪ "and other starry sky shows that even young children can easily relate to are shown.

"The healing program "could be used for a date. "Searching for an Oasis in the Universe - A Journey to the Miracle Star - music by Taro Hakase "has a great healing effect and must improve the mood.

The variety of programs is so great that you may not be able to choose just one. In such cases, purchasing a "Duo Ticket "or "Triple Ticket "and watching two or three programs will not only double your enjoyment, but will also save you money financially.

"Sophia Sakai "is not only a planetarium, but also an observatory. On the sixth floor of the facility, there is a reflecting telescope with an aperture of approximately 60 cm, one of the largest in Osaka Prefecture. Once a week, "astronomical observation sessions "are held, where visitors can actually see the night sky projected in the planetarium through the telescope and large 15cm binoculars. "The Astronomical Observation Session "is free of charge but requires a numbered ticket. Numbered tickets are issued in front of the planetarium, so you can go directly to "Astronomical Observation "without hesitation after seeing the planetarium.

Subaru Hall (Tondabayashi City)

In Tondabayashi City, located in the Minamikawachi region of Osaka Prefecture, you can see a planetarium at "Subaru Hall ". Realistic starry skies and powerful CG images are projected on a large screen with a dome diameter of approximately 20 meters. On weekdays, all times are reserved for groups except for the 3:00 p.m. start time, but on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, all times are open to the public.

Projected programs change seasonally, but from August 29 to October 15, 2023, "Crayon Shin-chan: Seven Wonders of the Starry Sky and School "and "Nintama Rantaro's Space Adventure "are screened. All of these programs can be easily enjoyed by families from infants to adults. The staff will explain in detail about the wonders of the stars and the universe, so you can gain trivia knowledge about space.

Although irregular, there is sometimes an unusual program called "Starry Sky Aroma ". The dome is transformed into a relaxing space with the aroma of aromatherapy under the star-filled sky and gentle music to your ears. Palo Santo, bergamot, and sandalwood are prepared on the scent menu, making this program a must for women.

In addition to the planetarium, the dome also features large video projections. "In the Dinosaur Super World: Inherited Life ", two dinosaurs that have evolved in a unique way are projected in a powerful way.

Other events are also planned such as "Star gazing event ", "Planet de ehon "and many more. "Subaru Hall "is full of fun for all ages and purposes.

We have introduced three facilities with planetarium facilities in Osaka Prefecture, but there is actually one more. It is "Dream 21 (Children's Culture and Sports Center) "in Higashiosaka City. Unfortunately, it is currently closed until March 1, 2024 due to renovation work on the power receiving and transforming equipment.

"Dream21 "has installed the world's highest performance optical planetarium "Chiron III ", customized exclusively for Higashiosaka City. By projecting images onto the dome, the Milky Way can be reproduced with over one billion stars. The latest fulldome surround digital video system, when coupled with sound and lighting equipment, will create a delicate and powerful space. The facility's green-toned interior will make visitors feel as if they are lying on the grass or lawn and looking up at the starry sky.
