The festival that made national headlines

▲Danjiri Museum - experience the festival even off-season

Kishiwada's Danjiri Festival, renowned as the hottest festival in Japan, is a traditional festival with a history of over 300-year-long history. With its origins in the mid-Edo period, it has become a focal point of the local culture. The sight of the floats called danjiri being pulled through the streets is a sight to behold and has made national headlines on multiple occasions.

▲Danjiri Kaikan: Carving techniques nurtured by history and tradition and passed down for generations

At the Kishiwada Danjiri Kaikan, visitors can learn about the history and charm of the festival in depth through a wealth of exhibits. Of particular note is the actual danjiri float, which was built more than 180 years ago and was actually used until fairly recently. The floats that run at breakneck speed through the streets are decorated with delicate carvings that rival the architecture of temples and shrines, and the splendor of the carvings is not to be missed.

A taste of typical Kishiwada sweets, loved by castle lords and unchanged for over 200 years

▲Traditional hand-made Japanese sweets

Four hundred years ago, during the Edo period (1603-1868), castle towns all over Japan gave birth to wagashi Japanese sweets that were unique to each region. In Kishiwada, wagashi are also made in a way that makes the most of the local climate, and are still made using the same methods as in the past.

For this article we have selected three traditional sweets shops located close to one of the oldest roads of Japan, namely Mikasaya, Koyama Baikado and Kishiwada Fugetsudo.

▲Many local sweets have gained recognition as Osakamon prime gourmet items

Mikasaya's walnut rice cakes are made from green soybeans and have a refreshing flavor.
Koyama Baikado's Umehana-Murasame, which has been certified as an Osaka specialty, has a moderate sweetness and a nice melt-in-your-mouth texture that is quite addictive.
Kishiwada Fugetsudo's Tamashigure, with its scattered sweet soybeans reminding one of rain and its moist texture, is simply irresistible.
Each shop has their specialty and comparing all of them is one fun way to enjoy Kishiwada to its fullest!
